As always, the Simpsons manage to predict the future.
The 1998 episode "The Flying Hellfish" re-introduced the concept of a 'tontine' to American audiences.
Despite his misgivings about the assets backing the tontine (stolen loot from the war), Abe quickly realises that he needs 'a nest egg for retirement so that (he) won't end up in an old folks home'.
Tontines were once ubiquitous in Europe and the US and have long fascinated storytellers with numerous books and movies being written about on the topic.
While the Simpsons tontine design is markedly different from a modern Tontine Trust which pays a monthly income for life, Abe would have endorsed the OECD and the US administration both of which are now recommending that every saver should have access to retirement tontines.
For this reason, expect to see a lot more about Tontines on your TV in the coming years.
